    Quality » Background

Furnas approach to Quality began with construction of the first major hydroelectric power station in Brazil – the Furnas Hydroelectric Plant, built in 1957, in the state of Minas Gerais.

During the 1970s, when the Angra I Nuclear Power Station was built, rigorous procedures were developed up to international standards for overseeing, verifying and controlling projects. These procedures were then consolidated to create a Quality Assurance Program which changed the approach to quality throughout the country.

In July 1991, Furnas implemented the Total Quality System - TQS, in order to create an environment and mechanisms for adopting Total Quality Management. The TQS was divided into three groups: the Quality and Productivity Supervisory Group - GSQP; Quality and Productivity Committees - CQP; and Quality Teams.

Already aware of the need to adopt international quality standards, Furnas took another step forward in 1996 when one of its units received NBR ISO 9001:1994 certification, the first of many.

Between 1998 and 2002, the company adopted an internal awards process to increase awareness of certain management concepts, selecting units to receive the Furnas Excellence Award - the PFE. The company was also involved in external awards programs, such as the National Public Management Award, Rio Quality Award, São Paulo Quality Management Award, the Minas Quality Award, the Espirito Santo Quality Award and the Federal District Quality Award.

In March 2003, the company adopted a management model which is based on three pillars: the Criteria for Excellence from the National Quality Foundation; the standard set out in the certification rules for NBR ISO 9001 - Quality Management, NBR ISO 14001 - Environmental Management, OHSAS 18001 - Health and Occupational Safety Management and SA 8000 - Social Responsibility; and Laboratory Testing Accreditation, apart from which it also complies with a range of additional legal and regulatory requirements.

Between 2003 and 2006, because of its importance at state and federal level, Furnas became an anchor company in the state of Rio de Janeiro for the Public Service Quality Program - PQSP, currently known as the National Program for Public Management and Reduction of Bureaucracy - GESPUBLICA.

In 2008, management systems at 61 company units have been certified under NBR ISO 9001:2000; NBR ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:1999.

One of the biggest challenges for Furnas has been its constant search for excellence. The future is full of challenges and the company is ready to continue acting as an active agent, building tomorrow, helping the country achieve the highest possible level of development.
