Innovation has always been part of Furnas' history and culture. In the 1950s, the challenge was to build what would then be one of the biggest hydroelectric power stations in the world, the Furnas Hydroelectric Plant that would give the company its name, in order to meet demand from Brazil's expanding industrial base. Later, in the 1970s, Eletrobras Furnas was responsible for finding innovative solutions for implementing extra high-voltage alternate and direct current circuits in order to transport the energy generated by the Itaipu Plant.

After more than 50 years, Eletrobras Furnas has become a benchmark for the Brazilian electricity sector and one of the biggest investors in new technologies. Its R&D projects, regulated by ANEEL under Laws 9991/2000 and 10,848/2004, are a part of our incessant search for innovation to drive continuous and sustainable growth.
