    The Company » New projects

Furnas is responsible for more of the Accelerated Growth Program (PAC) projects than any other company in the Brazilian electricity industry. Over the last two years, Furnas and its partners have started commercial operations at the following hydroelectric plants: Baguari (140 MW) and Retiro Baixo (82 MW), in Minas Gerais; Serra do Facão (212,58 MW), in Goiás; and Foz do Chapecó (855 MW), at the border between the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.

The company is also responsible for building the Simplício Hydroelectric Project – which includes the Anta and Simplício power plants on the Paraíba do Sul river (RJ/MG) - which will have an output of 333.7 MW; as well as the Batalha Hydroelectric Plant (MG/GO), producing 52.5 MW. These projects are wholly owned by Furnas.

In December 2010, the consortium that Furnas is engaged with was selected during the National Electrical Energy Agency (Aneel) auction to construct the 1820 MW Teles Pires Hydroelectric Plant (MT/PA), the first a number of projects in the Teles Pires River basin.

Following a decision to diversify and increase the share of renewable sources of energy in its generating portfolio, the company is now part of a group of businesses which have been granted a concession to build the Miassaba III and Rei dos Ventos I and III wind farms on the Rio Grande do Norte coastline, which are expected to come online during the second half of 2012. In 2014, the company will build the Famosa I, Rosada, Pau Brasil and São Paulo wind farms, whose construction has been guaranteed by energy sales made at the Energy Reserve Auction 03/2011. At the end of 2011, Furnas also sold future electricity output from the Ubatuba, Pitombeira, Santa Catarina, Horizonte, Goiabeira, Nossa Senhora de Fátima, Jandaia, Jandaia I, São Clemente and São Januário windfarms – all located in Ceará. The 17 wind farms will have a total output of 437 MW.

In the transmission area, its partners also have over 3.9 thousand kilometers of transmission lines being designed and built, which will be added to the National Interconnection System. Following its world-class operation and maintenance of the Itaipu Transmission System, Furnas is in a position to engage in new projects using direct current technology, such as the Porto Velho - Araraquara 2 Transmission Line. Covering a distance of 2375 km, this will be the largest direct current project in the world, transporting electricity produced by the hydroelectric plants on the Madeira River (RO). Furnas is a member of the consortium in charge of building and operating the circuit. The Porto Velho-Araraquara 2 Transmission Line will receive 3 billion BRL in investment and create 3000 direct jobs.
