The history of the Mascarenhas de Moraes Plant, previously known as the Peixoto Plant, goes back to 1947, 10 years before FURNAS was created and when the Companhia Paulista de Força e Luz (CPFL) ran a serious risk of electricity shortages. Studies carried out in the 59,600 km² drainage basin showed the benefits of building the dam, which would also be able to control the flow of the Grande river.

In 1950, the CPFL obtained a concession to build a hydroelectric plant at a location close to the city of Ibiraci. Seven years later, two 40 MW units went into operation. This was the first large-scale power plant built on the Grande river.

Located between the Furnas (upstream) and Luiz Carlos Barreto de Carvalho (downstream) plants, Mascarenhas de Moraes is one of two major energy complexes. Subsequently, after controlling the flow of the Grande river, an achievement mainly attributed to the Furnas Plant, further units were installed and in 1968, the then Peixoto Plant reached its full capacity of 476 MW, with 10 generating units.

In December of the same year, Peixoto was renamed the Marechal Mascarenhas de Moraes Plant. FURNAS took over responsibility for operating the plant on August 1, 1973, following a decision by Eletrobras.
