Another important area is the work the company is doing with environmental control agencies, directing funding towards 24 legally protected areas in the states of Goiás, Tocantins, Mato Grosso, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and the Federal District to help preserve their ecosystems.

This project benefits society by conserving genetic resources and supporting the organized use of these areas for scientific activities, tourism and leisure.

Furnas has invested significant resources at these conservation units. Since 1992, partnerships with environmental bodies have helped legalize land ownership, acquire equipment, improve enforcement and monitoring infrastructures and implement management plans.
