Who we are

When FURNAS was first created, its mission was to avoid the energy breakdown that threatened Brazil's industrialization process in the 1950s. This involved building the country's first large-scale hydroelectric plant: the Furnas Plant (MG). The company has since played a crucial role in the development of Brazilian society.

Created on February 28, 1957, the company currently has facilities in the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Paraná, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Tocantins, Rondônia, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Bahia and in the Federal District.

FURNAS' performance over the past six decades has turned into a benchmark for other energy companies looking to tailor their structure to the new regulatory landscape of the Brazilian electricity industry. The company prioritizes operational efficiency, process performance, sustainable investment and measures that increase management transparency.

FURNAS has increased its share of renewable, conventional and alternative sources and energy transmission, through auctions carried out by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) and remains a benchmark for the Brazilian energy generation and transmission industry.

The company’s energy network includes 22 hydroelectric, 2 thermoelectric plants and 1 wind farms complex, either owned by the company or in partnership with the private sector, 35,201.26 km of transmission lines and 72 substations.
