Baguari Plant

The Baguari Hydroelectric Power Plant is located on the Doce River, in the city of Governador Valadares, eastern Minas Gerais. The 16 16 km² reservoir supplies the cities of Governador Valadares, Alpercata, Fernandes Tourinho, Iapu, Periquito and Sobrália. The plant is linked to the National Interconnected System (NIS) via a 3 km, 230 kV line that links to the Mesquita-Governador Valadares II TL (Cemig).

The is a ground-breaking project. Built by the Baguari HEP Consortium, in which FURNAS holds a 15% stake and inaugurated in October 2009, the hydroelectric plant is the first electric power project in the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC) built by a public-private partnership. The plant is also the first in the FURNAS System to use bulb type turbines, which generate energy from low heads, reducing the area flooded by the reservoir. The same technology is being deployed at the Santo Antônio Plant, located on the Madeira River (RO).

Baguari has made it possible to create a 34-hectare Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN), 170 hectares of ecological corridors and a Fish Transposition System ("fish ladder") that allows native Rio Doce species to maintain their reproductive habits, via an environmental offsetting scheme.
