Campos Plant

Construction of this plant in the state of Rio de Janeiro was authorized by Decree No. 49,638 dated December 30, 1960, published in the Federal Register on the same date. Its original name was the Roberto Silveira Thermoelectric Plant. It became known as Usina Termelétrica de Campos on July 1977, when operational capabilities were transferred from CELF - Centrais Elétricas Fluminenses S.A. to FURNAS Centrais Elétricas S.A.

Construction began in 1963. The plant's main equipment, such as boilers and turbogenerators, were manufactured in Japan by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 1961. Unit 1 began operating on December 20, 1968 and unit 2 on March 11, 1971.

Generator 1 was converted into a synchronous condenser due to the high cost of oil and went into operation in April 1981.

In November 1996, the synchronous compensator began being reconverted to a generator, since research carried out by the Company's Electrical Studies Department did not indicate the need for Unit 1 to operate as a synchronous compensator.

Given the forecast energy situation for 1997 and the contractual commitment to generate a guaranteed 25 MW of energy, the FURNAS Department of Electrical Energy Trading and Operational Planning recommended that the two generator units be maintained as conventional generators.

After Petrobras’ decision to build a gas pipeline leading to the city of Campos, FURNAS decided to adapt the plant’s boilers to burn natural gas because natural gas was widely available and one of the advantages of converting was that it would comply with the State Environmental Engineering Foundation's requirements to grant the permanent operating license.

The process of adapting the boilers to use natural gas was completed on August 27 (unit 1) and September 4 (unit 2) of 1998. The modernization of boiler supervision and control instrumentation was also carried out at the same time.

The plant also has one substation with a 69 kV bus and another with a 138 kV bus. In addition to its own generation, the plant receives power from the Campos Substation and sends it to the city of Campos and surrounding areas using four 69 kV circuits and four 138 kV circuits.
